Questions about tennis in Singapore?
Question: How to choose a tennis coach in Singapore?
Answer: The tennis coach must know the proper technique, footwork, serve etc.
Your tennis coach should not be hitting in a funny or incorrect way or teach you strange things, for example " serving with the wrong grip, strokes have no follow through or take back, elbow touching the body when hitting ground strokes" etc
Question: Where is the best place to buy tennis shoes in Singapore?
Answer: I recommend buying them online if you can find good prices on shipping. Last resort would be Queensway Shopping Centre or Tennis hub at coronation plaza. You should try to go to all the floors (1st to 3rd floor) and compare the best prices for the shoe you want. You can also try to find a good deal at outlet malls such as IMM and Changi City Point if you are lucky.
Question: Is it okay if I do not have a tennis racket for the tennis lesson?
Answer: Our tennis coaches are able to provide a racket for you, however we would suggest that you get your own tennis racket. You may ask the tennis coach for advice on choosing a tennis racket suitable for you as you will want to get used to your racket during your tennis lesson!
Question: Do I need tennis shoes for the tennis lesson?
Answer: Yes, you do! In fact, I recommend you buy one before you start. Tennis shoes are much more stable compared to other shoes. They are tougher on the sides so you can change direction as you hit easily. If you use running shoes, your feet will start to shift out of position and you will not be able to push off properly. However, if you are only planning to try tennis out for a short while, then wearing your sport shoes is good enough!
Question: Do I need to bring an energy drink for the tennis lesson?
Answer: Maybe. It depends on your personal fitness level as well as how hot it might be on that day.
Question: Are there any forfeit if I cancel my tennis lesson?
Answer: Yes but it depends on your situation, check out the cancellation policies for both package and non-package lessons on our lesson page for more information! You may ask your tennis coach for more details.
Question: Are we a tennis academy in Singapore?
Answer: No, a tennis academy is a place for athletes to train full time. Tennis academies would typically provide accommodation for athletes to stay there as well. We wouldn't call the tennis academies in Singapore full-fledged tennis academies as they do not have accommodations for athletes to stay in and train.
Question: Where can I find tennis players to play with in Singapore?
Answer: You can download an app called Rovo on your mobile device and create or join tennis sessions that other people host. There are players who are at competitive levels there as well.
Question: Can you help my kid get into a tennis school in Singapore?
Answer: Our professional tennis coaches can train your kid till he/she reaches the competitive level to compete with various players of the same age or higher. However, personal discipline and hard work are also important qualities that they must possess while learning tennis.
Question: Where is the best place to buy tennis rackets in Singapore?
Answer: Queensway offers a range of shops that sells different brands of rackets. However, you can also try places like lucky plaza, coronation plaza and other tennis specific shops. Buying from places like Royal Sporting House or World of Sports is a big no-no as the rackets are overpriced there and they only carry some racket brands.
If you have nowhere else to buy a racket from, you can buy from Royal Sporting House or World of Sports if there is a sale going on. We strongly advise that you check with someone who knows about tennis rackets first before you purchase one. We do not want you to waste money buying a cheap or expensive but unusable racket. Decathlon also sells 2-3 good rackets that you can get at a super affordable price, the rest of their stock are not good.
Question: Where can I buy tennis balls in Singapore?
Answer: You can buy them at Queensway and/or tennis specific shops in Singapore. These shops offers a variety of brands of balls to choose from such as Dunlop (AO), Wilson (US Open), Slazenger (Wimbledon), HEAD and many more. We would not recommend that you buy from Royal Sporting House as the tennis balls are sold at a much higher price. You can also purchase tennis balls from decathlon or teloon.
Question: How can I book a tennis court in Singapore?
Answer: If you are looking for public courts, you may book the courts through the ActiveSG app. Off-peak hour rates are $3.50/hr while peak hour rates are $9.50/hr. Off-peak is from 7am to 6pm on weekdays while peak period is from 6pm to 10pm on weekdays and 7am to 10pm on the weekends and public holidays. Sheltered tennis courts are also available at Tampines Hub. As Tampines Hub is not under ActiveSG, you will have to book the tennis court through People's Association (PA).
Question: Can your tennis coaches coach at clubs in Singapore?
Answer: It depends on whether your Club allows external coaches to coach tennis there. You may try to apply for special permission but will most likely be denied. Most Clubs in Singapore do not allow external tennis coaches as they have their own set of resident club coaches available. Some Clubs do not allow basket of tennis balls to be brought in as well.
Do take note: SAFRA country club as well as Civil Service Club do not allow coaching. Students need to ask for permission to bring their own coaches in for coaching beforehand and court booking rates are more expensive than usual. However there are many people who break the rules, and if you coach there during peak timings, there will be green eyed tennis players or tennis coaches that will complain about you.
Question: What are the types of tennis courts in Singapore?
Answer: There are 4 main different surfaces for a tennis court that consist of clay, carpet, grass and hard courts. They all impact the player on how the game is played. Players will often have a court they prefer and play well on. In Singapore, other than just the many hard courts you see everywhere, there are actually clay and grass courts around, as well as other artificial surfaces.
Question: Can we take group tennis lessons together if we are of different levels?
Answer: Yes you can, however, note that the higher level tennis player will improve at a slower pace until the beginner has caught up to a level that is sufficient to do similar tennis drills together.
